Feeding Hope
The Feeding Hope-a Backpack Program will give eligible children in grades prekindergarten to third at South Gibson County Elementary School a backpack filled with food to take home every Friday of school. This will providing food for them to eat on the weekends.
Research shows that one in six Tennessee families face hunger. Many of these families are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from. This increases on weekends and during the summer months for some school age children. Feeding Hope will provide additional nourishment during the early years of students' lives when cognitive and physiological development is at their greatest. This program is designed to provide nutrition, ease student anxiety, reduce absenteeism, improve student attention span, raise academic performance and increase student self-esteem. By eating better, children are able to play harder and will perform better academically.
Each Friday students will receive a bag that contains two entrees, two serving of fruit, two breakfast items, one juice and shelf stable milk along with snacks. Students who qualify for the program will remain on the program until they are no longer enrolled at SGC Elementary School or parent request to end the program. All children are selected based on a set criteria and with parent permission. The program is administered through the school counselor. If you would like to participate or assist in this program please contact, Traci Tate, MES School Counselor.
